Kansas City Family Photographer
Hi, I’m Merry. I’m a documentary and storytelling family photographer in Kansas City.
Kansas City Family Photography for Families Who Want Real Moments, Not Perfect Ones
Family photos don’t have to feel forced or stressful to be meaningful.
If you’ve been putting them off because you don’t want stiff poses, perfectly behaved kids, or a long, complicated process, you’re not alone.
My approach is simple. I create space for your family to be together, and I document what’s already there.
The way your child reaches for your hand. The way you laugh together. The in-between moments that usually go unnoticed but end up meaning the most.
You don’t need to prepare for perfection. You don’t need your kids to cooperate the whole time.
You just need to show up.
Is This the Right Fit for Your Family?
Family photos can feel like a big decision, especially if past experiences felt stressful or didn’t quite turn out the way you hoped.
This might be a good fit for your family if:
you want photos that feel natural, not overly posed
you care more about connection than perfection
your kids don’t sit still for long, and you don’t want to fight that
you’ve been putting off family photos because it feels like a lot to plan
you want images that reflect what your family actually feels like right now
You don’t need perfectly behaved kids. You don’t need everyone smiling at the same time. You don’t need to know exactly what to do.
You just need to show up as you are.
This may not be the right fit if you’re looking for a very structured, fully posed session where every detail is carefully directed from start to finish. There are photographers who specialize in that, and they do it well.
But if you’ve been hoping for something that feels a little more relaxed, a little more honest, and a lot more like your real life, this is usually where things start to click.
Looking for Something Shorter and Simpler?
Sometimes a full session feels like more than you need right now.
If you’ve been thinking about updating your family photos but want something easier to fit into your schedule, I offer seasonal mini sessions throughout the year.
Mini sessions are shorter and a bit more structured, but they still keep the same relaxed, natural approach. They’re a good fit for families who want a handful of meaningful images without planning a full session.
They’re also a really practical option if your kids do best with shorter time frames, or if you’ve been putting photos off because a full session hasn’t felt manageable.
Spring mini sessions are currently open for a limited time.

What a Session Actually Looks Like
A lot of people come into family photos wondering how it’s all going to go, especially if their kids are young or don’t love being told to stand still and smile.
The good news is, they don’t have to.
When you arrive, we’ll start in a way that feels easy. There’s no pressure to jump straight into anything. I’ll give you simple direction when you need it, but I’m not expecting perfect behavior or constant attention. I’m watching for connection, not control.
Most of the session is built around movement and interaction. You might walk together, hold your kids close, talk, laugh, or just be near each other. I’ll guide you into moments, but I won’t hold you there. The in-between is usually where the best images happen.
If your kids need to move, we let them move. If they’re shy, we ease into it. If things feel a little chaotic at times, that’s okay too. That’s part of real life, and I know how to work within that without making it stressful.
You don’t need to manage every moment. You don’t need to get everyone to cooperate perfectly. My job is to guide the session in a way that feels calm and natural while still creating images you’ll love.
By the end, most families are surprised by how simple it felt.
And when you see your photos, you’ll recognize your family in them, not a version of yourselves that only exists for the camera.
Documentary and Storytelling Family Photography
As a documentary and storytelling photographer, I provide space and direction that enables your family to be who you are, while capturing photos that will become family heirlooms for generations to come. I’ll make sure we get a few photos where everyone is smiling at the camera, but the majority of your session will be spent laughing, playing, and enjoying each other’s company. I come to every session armed with prompts and ideas that will help you escape any session anxiety and focus on being present with your people.
Family photos can be a source of anxiety and stress for everyone involved, but they don’t have to be. As your family photographer, my goal is to make a personal connection with each person in your family. This focus frees all of you to be yourselves and relax, which translates to fantastic family photos.
Family Photos for Present-Over-Perfect Families
Look, I know we don’t generally love photos of ourselves. Guilty here, too. But we don’t take family photos for our selves. We take family photos for our children, and for their children, and their children’s children.
Do you know what your children are thinking about when they see a photo of them with their mom and dad? They are thinking about how much you love them. They aren’t thinking that they wished you had lost a few pounds. They aren’t thinking that you had a flyaway hair, or that your smile was too wide, or that they don’t like how you look when you laugh.
They are so happy to see a photo of you hugging them, or holding them, or tickling them, or chasing them.
I’ve seen it over and over. When they catch a glimpse of their family photos, their eyes light up, a huge smile spreads across their face, and they practically levitate. “That’s us! That’s our family! Look how happy we are!”
And that’s why I do what I do. Because we don’t know how many days we’ll be given. Your children need you to show up in pictures. Now. For them.
It is my joy to help make that experience enjoyable for everyone.

I recommend to avoid “matching” and opt instead for attire that coordinates well. Instead of matching prints, think complementary colors. For example, warm or cool neutrals. If you plan to hang prints or canvasses on your walls, consider the color scheme of your home and choose accordingly. My client session guide has fantastic detailed guidance for attire, and I have many Pinterest inspiration boards that will help you! Or, read more here!

Surprise! You have human children! Honestly, if your children weren’t a little wild or shy, I might feel a little concerned. I am a mama to three and auntie to 9, and I promise, I will work with you and your people to get some great photos. My favorite photos are often the ones when we let them relax and just be themselves.

Yes, I do! I love at-home sessions. Bare feet, snuggle couch sessions, art at the dining room table, baking cookies or making pancakes in the kitchen, reading books in Mom and Dad’s bed, or even playing in your back yard.

Kansas City is blessed by four distinct seasons, and there are wonderful features of each, but my favorite seasons for family photos are spring, summer, and autumn. Spring in Kansas City is full of life, fragrant blossoms and vibrant new colors. Summer features those long sunsets, perfect for a picnic in the park, or a walk down your favorite street. Autumn boasts all the beauty of a Midwest fall: crimson, gold, and tangerine hues fill endless trees as far as the eye can see. Perfection. Winter is beautiful in it’s own way, but I lean toward the other three months for family photos. UNLESS you’re in the mood for a snow session! And I am so in for that!

The earlier the better, but don’t hesitate to reach out if the urge strikes you and you are ready for photos THIS weekend! I may be able to work you in! Just reach out to me!
If You’re Ready to Book
There’s never really a season of life when things slow down enough to make family photos feel easy.
That’s part of why so many families wait.
But most of the time, what you actually need isn’t more time or a perfect plan. You just need a simple way to begin.

You don’t need everything to come together perfectly first.
You just need to choose a time and show up.
