What to Wear for Family Photos

What to Wear for Family Photos | Family Photographer Kansas City

Choosing the right clothing for family photos can make a significant impact on the overall look and feel of the pictures. Kansas City family photographers face no shortage of incredible vistas and backdrops for family photos, but no matter how beautiful the scenery, poor outfit choices can ruin your final result. There are many factors to consider when selecting the best attire for your family photos, but we’ve put together a short list of tips you’ll appreciate!

Coordinate colors.

Select a complementary color scheme, rather than matching prints or colors.

Opt for complementary colors or shades of the same color palette. Avoid wearing clashing or overly contrasting colors. Earth tones, pastels, or neutrals often work well. When in doubt, visit a local hardware store and scope out the paint section. Choose a paint swatch in the color family you like, and make sure the colors you choose go well with that swatch. For an electronic option, visit Canva’s free color palette generator. (Don’t worry, unsponsored.) Upload your inspo photo for colors, and experience the magic!

Avoid busy patterns.

Large, bold patterns or busy prints are too distracting in family photos.

Instead, go for solid colors or subtle patterns that won't overpower your faces and personalities. When in doubt, ask your family photographer! A professional photographerwill be happy to weigh in and provide feedback. In rare instances, a vibrant print might work, but 9 times out of 10 you will regret the choice. Your photos should be timeless and complement the decor in your home, so unless you have a vibrant signature color showcased throughout your home decor, steer clear of bright colors!

Dress for the location and season.

Consider the location and time of year when planning your outfits.

For outdoor shoots, think about the colors and tones that will harmonize with the surroundings. In colder months, you might want to wear layers or accessories to keep warm. Here in Kansas City, family photography is heavily weighted to spring and fall. If your family photo session will take place in the spring, consider pastels or light, warm or cool neutrals. If your session will take place in the fall, opt for warm, rich neutrals with a rich accent color to make your photos pop. However, bear in mind that your photos will adorn your walls year round. If you lean too heavily into warm fall colors, you might not want those displayed during other seasons.

Keep it timeless.

While it's fun to incorporate current fashion trends, keep in mind that family photos are likely to be displayed for years to come.

Opt for classic, timeless outfits that won't look dated or out of style. Choose comfort over flashy, and consider your family personalities. Steer clear of holiday color schemes and patterns, unless it is an intentional theme for your photo session.

Pay attention to fit.

Well-fitted clothing always looks better in photos.

Avoid clothes that are too tight or overly baggy. Ensure that everyone's clothes are comfortable and allow for movement. Choose dark colored shoes to serve as an anchor point, and make sure everyone has appropriate shoes and clothes that fit at least a week in advance. That way, if you do need to pick up something new, you have time for shipping or shopping.

Add texture and depth.

Consider incorporating different textures and layers to add visual interest to the photos.

Scarves, cardigans, jackets, or accessories can help create depth and dimension. For boys, vests, suspenders, sweaters/cardigans or jackets can add interest and depth. For girls, consider a scarf, sweater or cardigan, or even a textured skirt.

Be yourself.

Confidence translates to great family photos.

Choose outfits that reflect your family's personality and style, and that make you feel good. Make sure everyone is happy with what they are wearing, and if anyone isn’t happy, try to accommodate their preferences. It’s much easier to have a great photo session if everyone feels comfortable in their clothes and skin.

Plan ahead and try on outfits.

Lay out everyone's outfits together before the photoshoot day to see how they look as a group.

This will help you identify any potential clashes or imbalances in color and style. Ideally, you should have everyone try on their clothes, including shoes and accessories, 1 week ahead of time. Last minute shifts can cause stress and discord, so ironing all this out in advance will help your future self out!

Remember, the goal is to create a cohesive and visually appealing look for your family photos. By following these tips and adding your personal touch, you'll be well on your way to capturing beautiful memories in family photos you and your family will treasure forever.
