Loose Park Mini Sessions: Your Questions Answered

Loose Park is one of the most popular places in Kansas City for fall photos, and it's easy to see why. Big old trees, a quiet pond, and the beloved rose garden all come together just south of the Plaza.

It also comes with more questions than almost any other location I photograph. Permits, garden hours, crowds, and what you can and can't do there. So instead of a long story, I put together the questions families ask me most about fall mini sessions at Loose Park, along with honest answers.

Where is Loose Park?

Loose Park is at 5200 Wornall Road in Kansas City, Missouri, just south of the Country Club Plaza. It's centrally located, so it's an easy drive from most of the metro. There's parking around the edges of the park and inside it.

Do you need a permit for photos at Loose Park?

Yes. Kansas City Parks requires a permit for portrait or posed photography anywhere in Loose Park, whether the photographer is paid or not. The fee for family and portrait sessions is $25 per hour, and it's issued through Kansas City Parks and Recreation.

This rule is enforced, and it's been in place for years. When you book with a professional photographer, they should be taking care of the permit for you. If you're not sure whether yours is, just ask before you book. It saves everyone from an awkward moment on session day.

When can you take photos in the rose garden?

The Laura Conyers Smith Municipal Rose Garden is closed to photography Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. for maintenance. That means rose garden sessions happen on weekday evenings or on weekends.

Only four permitted photographers can be in the garden at one time, which helps keep it from getting too crowded.

Is the rose garden still pretty in the fall?

It is, just in a different way. The roses peak in early summer, so by October most of them have faded. But the stone walkways, the circular courtyard, and the pergola are still there, and the trees around the garden start turning gold and red.

I actually love the garden in fall. It feels quieter and more intimate, and the warm colors are beautiful with the old stone.

What else is there besides the rose garden?

The pond is one of my favorite spots in the park, and a lot of people walk right past it. It's southeast of the rose garden, and on a calm evening the trees reflect on the water. The light along the edge at golden hour is lovely, and it's usually less busy than the garden.

The park also has wide lawns and tree lined paths, which work well for families who want a more relaxed, natural look.

Will it be crowded?

On fall weekend evenings, probably a little. Loose Park is well loved, and you'll likely see other families, walkers, and photographers.

That's okay. It's part of photographing at a popular park, and a photographer who knows Loose Park knows how to work around it. The crowds won't show up in your photos.

How long is a mini session, and what can we get done?

My mini sessions are 15 minutes. At a park like this, that means we choose one area, usually the rose garden or the pond, and make the most of it.

That might sound short, but with one beautiful spot and good light, it's plenty of time for a variety of photos. We'll do some together, some of the kids, and some sweet, candid moments in between.

What should we wear?

Loose Park has a classic, slightly formal feel, especially in the rose garden. Outfits with a little polish fit right in. You don't need to dress up, but very casual looks can feel a bit out of place.

Warm fall colors are beautiful against the stone and greenery. Burgundy, rust, camel, olive, cream, and soft gray are all great choices. Rich, deep tones look especially pretty with the ironwork in the garden.

The paths in the garden are smooth, but the ground near the pond can be uneven, so wear shoes you can walk in.

Can we bring snacks or a picnic?

Not into the rose garden. Food and picnics aren't allowed there. Save the snacks for the car or for another part of the park after your session.

Why is it called Loose Park?

Ella Loose gave the land to the city in honor of her husband, Jacob Loose, who founded the company behind Sunshine Biscuits. The rose garden came later and has become one of the most photographed places in Kansas City.

It's a sweet story, and I like knowing that a place built to honor someone you love is now where so many families come to make their own memories.
