The Boy Who Wouldn’t Look at Me | Motherhood Sessions in Kansas City
A few years ago I was sitting on the floor in a family’s living room photographing a toddler who was stacking blocks next to his mom. He was at that age where everything is exciting and nothing would hold his attention for very long.
Every time he knocked the blocks over, he looked up at her first.
Not at me.
Not at the toy.
At her.
She laughed, scooped him into her lap, and brushed his hair back from his forehead without even thinking about it. It was one of those small moments that happens a hundred times a day in a house with little kids.
Later, when I delivered their gallery, she wrote back and said something that stuck with me.
She said, “I didn’t realize how few photos existed of me with him like this.”
Her phone was full of pictures of her son.
But almost none with her in them.
I hear that same thing from moms all the time.
And honestly, it makes sense.
Why So Many Moms Are Missing From Their Own Family Photos
Most of the time, Mom is the one documenting family life.
She is the one taking the photos on her phone.
She is the one planning the family session.
She is the one making sure everyone looks halfway presentable before the camera comes out.
She is keeping track of birthdays, school events, holidays, and milestones. She is the one making sure those memories are preserved.
But that also means she is often missing from the photos themselves.
Scroll through almost any mom’s camera roll and you will see hundreds of photos of the kids. You might see a few of Dad playing with them. You might see grandparents or friends.
But very few photos of Mom simply being with her children.
Not posed.
Not staged.
Just living life with them.
That gap in the story is one of the reasons I decided to offer something a little different this year.
Introducing Limited Motherhood Sessions for Mother’s Day
For Mother’s Day this year, I am offering a small number of Motherhood Sessions.
These are full, 60 minute in home sessions offered at a reduced rate.
They are not mini sessions.
There is no rushing through a line of families in a park. There is no pressure to get the perfect smiling photo in ten minutes.
Instead, we slow down and spend time inside your real life.
These sessions include:
A 60 minute session
In your Kansas City area home
A documentary approach with gentle guidance
Space for your whole family to be part of it
8 fully-edited final images
Option to purchase additional images or full gallery
My regular session rate is $700. For Mother’s Day, these sessions are available for $350 and there are only a limited number available.
Why I Photograph Motherhood at Home
Home is where family life actually happens.
Where your kids run when they are excited.
Where they come when they are hurt.
Where the routines and rhythms of your family live.
When I photograph families in their homes, everything feels more natural.
Kids relax.
They move the way they normally move.
They climb into your lap without hesitation.
We might photograph you reading together on the couch.
Helping with homework at the kitchen table.
Holding a baby who just woke up from a nap.
Sometimes the kids want to show me their room. Sometimes they want to play on the floor. Sometimes they just want to sit close to you.
Those moments may feel small in the middle of a busy day, but they are the ones that hold the most meaning later.
You Do Not Need a Perfect House for an In-Home Session
One of the first things people say when they hear “in home session” is something like this.
“My house is not clean enough.”
I understand that feeling. But the truth is, the photos that matter most later are rarely the perfectly styled ones.
They are the ones that feel familiar.
The rocking chair in the corner of the nursery.
The couch where everyone piles together for movie night.
The kitchen where snacks happen all day long.
Children do not remember spotless countertops. They remember how their home felt.
They remember where they sat next to you. They remember the sound of your voice reading bedtime stories. They remember the way you held them.
Those are the moments we focus on.
Why These Years of Motherhood Matter
Motherhood has a strange way of stretching time and compressing it all at once.
The days can feel long. There is always something that needs attention. Someone needs a snack. Someone lost a shoe. Someone has a question that cannot wait.
But the years move faster than anyone expects.
One day your toddler fits easily on your hip.
Before long they are too heavy to carry.
Eventually they stop asking to be carried at all.
The closeness of early childhood changes slowly, and then all at once.
That is why photographs from these years matter so much.
They show your children what it looked like when they were small enough to fit in your arms.
They show them the way you looked at them.
They show them how loved they were.
What a Motherhood Session Looks Like
A motherhood session is quiet and unhurried.
We might start in the living room while the kids play. Maybe someone brings a book to read together. Maybe a toddler climbs into your lap and refuses to leave.
Sometimes we move to the kitchen for a snack break. Sometimes we step outside if the kids want to run in the yard.
There is no script.
I guide a little when needed, but most of the time I am watching for the moments that already exist between you and your children.
The way they reach for your hand.
The way you brush hair away from their face.
The way they lean into you when they are tired.
Those small interactions tell the real story.

Kansas City In-Home Family Photography
I photograph families across the Kansas City area, including Liberty, the Northland, Overland Park, Lee’s Summit, and nearby communities.
In-home sessions allow families to relax in a familiar space and create photographs that feel personal and true to their daily life.
Every home tells a slightly different story, and that is part of what makes these sessions meaningful.
