The Plaza's Spanish-style buildings and ornate fountains create a sophisticated backdrop for family portraits. In addition to being an extremely walkable area, the Country Club Plaza holds no shortage of history and interesting architecture. In the spring, you can take advantage of the park’s beautiful Japanese Cherry Blossom trees blooming in gorgeous pink and white. In the fall, rich autumn hues provide breathtaking background for family photos. 3. Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Combining art and nature, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is an architectural marvel that provides an elegant backdrop for family photos.

The museum's neoclassical exterior, featuring massive limestone columns and expansive green lawns, creates a grand ambiance. The sculpture garden provides numerous opportunities for distinct photo backgrounds, including unique sculptures, the manicured lawn, the tree lined path, and quaint natural settings. At the time of this posting, there is currently no charge to schedule a photo session at the Nelson, however your photographer must check in with security before beginning your session. Be sure to call ahead to find out if there are any on site events before planning your family photo session at the Nelson; if there is an event on site, photos may be prohibited on the grounds during that time.

4. West Bottoms

For families seeking an urban and slightly edgy atmosphere, the West Bottoms neighborhood offers a distinct backdrop for memorable family photos.

With its industrial buildings, colorful graffiti walls, and rustic charm, this area exudes character and uniqueness. The juxtaposition of vintage storefronts and contemporary street art creates an eclectic setting that will make your family portraits truly stand out. While there are numerous businesses that prefer no photography near their building, there are also many which do not mind. Be sure to look for signs, and be mindful of businesses and individuals who are conducting business.

6. Union Station

As one of the city's most iconic landmarks, Union Station is a magnificent backdrop for family portraits.

Indoors, the historic train station's grand architecture, with its towering clock tower and ornate details, lends a sense of timeless elegance to your photographs. The nearby outdoor spaces, such as the spacious lawn at nearby Liberty Memorial and surrounding gardens, offer additional opportunities for capturing beautiful family moments. Union Station requires a photo permit, which can be acquired in advance, or at the security desk upon arrival. That being said, be sure to check if Union Station is hosting any events on the day you plan to take photos. If there is an event on sight, they may prohibit you from portrait photography that day. During the holidays, Union Station typically waives the permit fee between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, but it’s important to inquire to be sure you don’t need a permit at that time.
